Anal Atresia

Paxil Use While Pregnant Linked to Anal Atresia

Reports have surfaced that link a Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitor (SSRI) anti-depressants such as Paxil to birth defects such as Anal Atresia. This is a particularly bad birth defect because it affects the rectum area. Anal Atresia, also known as imperforate anus, will require immediate surgery. If the defect is severe enough, it will have to treated with a perineal anoplasty or with a colostomy. The defect can cause the child to have problems controlling their bowel movements and become constipated if the lesion is high. With a low lesion, the bowel movement can be controlled, but constipation still can be a problem. Some children will have to undergo more surgery if the angle between the anus and the rectum needs to be improved. Whatever the case, it is a heartbreaking scene to see a newborn child have to be put under the knife at such a young age. Not to mention the cost of such operations for parents who are most likely just trying to survive in a bad economy.

Anal Atresia is just one defect that has been associated with Paxil use while pregnant over the past few years. Some defects affect the heart such as "Tetralogy of Fallot", "Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome" and "Interrupted Aortic Arch". Others, like "Gastroschisis", cause organs to spill into the abdominal cavity. Others affect the brain such as "Hydrocephalus". Regardless of what defect a child has to endure, there is no reason they should have to be stricken with a defect because their mothers took Paxil thinking it would help treat depression. The manufacturers of Paxil knew about the birth defects and failed to inform the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In 2005, the FDA said mothers who are pregnant should not take Paxil because of the increased risk of birth defects.

If your child was born with a defect such as Anal Atresia, then you need to contact an attorney today. Taking on pharmaceutical companies like those that make Paxil can be precarious unless you have a good attorney by your side. These companies show little concern for victims of their negligence, so you will need an attorney that can present convincing evidence to a judge or a jury that will show that you and your child were wronged by these companies.
