Anal Atresia

Paxil Use While Pregnant Linked to Anal Atresia

Reports have surfaced that link a Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitor (SSRI) anti-depressants such as Paxil to birth defects such as Anal Atresia. This is a particularly bad birth defect because it affects the rectum area. Anal Atresia, also known as imperforate anus, will require immediate surgery. If the defect is severe enough, it will have to treated with a perineal anoplasty or with a colostomy. The defect can cause the child to have problems controlling their bowel movements and become constipated if the lesion is high. With a low lesion, the bowel movement can be controlled, but constipation still can be a problem. Some children will have to undergo more surgery if the angle between the anus and the rectum needs to be improved. Whatever the case, it is a heartbreaking scene to see a newborn child have to be put under the knife at such a young age. Not to mention the cost of such operations for parents who are most likely just trying to survive in a bad economy.

Anal Atresia is just one defect that has been associated with Paxil use while pregnant over the past few years. Some defects affect the heart such as "Tetralogy of Fallot", "Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome" and "Interrupted Aortic Arch". Others, like "Gastroschisis", cause organs to spill into the abdominal cavity. Others affect the brain such as "Hydrocephalus". Regardless of what defect a child has to endure, there is no reason they should have to be stricken with a defect because their mothers took Paxil thinking it would help treat depression. The manufacturers of Paxil knew about the birth defects and failed to inform the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In 2005, the FDA said mothers who are pregnant should not take Paxil because of the increased risk of birth defects.

If your child was born with a defect such as Anal Atresia, then you need to contact an attorney today. Taking on pharmaceutical companies like those that make Paxil can be precarious unless you have a good attorney by your side. These companies show little concern for victims of their negligence, so you will need an attorney that can present convincing evidence to a judge or a jury that will show that you and your child were wronged by these companies.

If you need a qualified attorney, talk to Chandler, Mathis & Zivley, PC. We have an experienced team of lawyers that can represent you to the fullest in litigation. Your child should not have to live with Anal Atresia, "Craniosyntosis", "Chiari Malformation" or any other defect as a result of Paxil intake. Contact us today for an appointment.

In Addition To A Number Of Congenital Heart Defects, Anal Atresia Has Been Linked To Paxil Use

[Posted on Sep 26]

Doctors have been diagnosing newborns with an array of Paxil birth defects over the last decade after the research revealed that use of the antidepressant during pregnancy can lead to these health problems. This revelation came as a shock to those thousands of women who had used the medication while pregnant without any warnings regarding the potential harm they were doing to their unborn child. The FDA has since reclassified the drug as a Category D medication in hopes of preventing more cases of Paxil birth defects but families already affected need help as well.

The health problems associated with Paxil use during pregnancy vary greatly. Many of the birth defects linked to Paxil are congenital heart problems, such as hypoplastic left heart syndrome, interrupted aortic arch, and patent ductus arteriosus, all of which are very serious and pose long term health concerns. There are other conditions which have since been linked to Paxil, including a defect known as anal atresia. While it varies in severity, anal atresia almost always requires surgery and often a single surgery is not enough to fully correct the problem. Multiple procedures of this nature not only compound the stress that the families of these children are going through but their costs can cause quite a financial burden on the families as well.

It’s completely understandable that parents who have given birth to a child with anal atresia and suspect it to be caused by Paxil seek out legal advice. Had they been given any indication that using Paxil in or around their pregnancy posed even the slightest of risk defects like anal atresia, these women would have chosen an alternate method of treating their depression. Having not been given that choice, they are right to believe the makers of Paxil are responsible for the damage their product has caused.

Speaking with a Paxil attorney is the right move for families that are having difficulty paying for the medical care needed for their child with Paxil birth defects. The law offices of Chandler, Mathis, & Zivley, PC, offer a free legal consultation for these victims so that they have an opportunity to learn about their options without any obligation. As a leading firm in Paxil litigation, they’ve been able to help a number of families secure financial compensation from GlaxoSmithKline, the makers of Paxil. These Paxil lawsuits also help to raise awareness of this issue and encourage others to step forward with legal action.
