Paxil Linked to Atrial Septal Defects (ASD) and Ventricular Septal Defects (VSD)
Newborns with severe cardiac birth defects such as ASD/VSD have been linked by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to the use of the drug Paxil during pregnancy. On Dec. 8, 2005, the FDA published a warning on Paxil. At Chandler, Mathis & Zivley, PC we encourage you if you have a child suffering from congenital heart defects such as ASD/VSD and you were prescribed Paxil during pregnancy, to hire one of our litigation attorneys and take action against GlaxoSmithKline, the creator of Paxil.
As experienced Paxil litigation lawyers, we understand the severity of such birth defects on the child and the family of birth defects caused by the use of Paxil. We consider it our goal to provide our clients with talented and passionate representation in order to go up against the large pharmaceutical companies and recover the compensation to which you and your loved ones are entitled. We realize that although financial recoveries can never bring the birth of a healthy child, they can allow families to pay choking medical and long term care costs that accompany babies suffering with ASD/VSD. Furthermore, most importantly this type of action sends a clear message to manufacturers such as GlaxoSmithKline to prevent the same such injuries and losses to other families in the future.
What is Paxil (Paroxetine)?
Paxil is an antidepressant in a group of drugs referred to as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). It works by restoring the balance of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain, which helps to improve mood problems. Paxil is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. In December 2005, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned pregnant women and doctors of an increased risk of heart birth defects in newborns when taking Paxil such as ASD/VSD. The FDA analyzed two studies which found that women who took Paxil in the first three months of pregnancy were one and a half - to two times more likely to give birth to a child with a heart defect such as ASD/VSD than women who took other antidepressants or pregnant women overall. GlaxoSmithKline knew about these types of birth defects in 1998 and did nothing to remove the drug from markets.
Birth defects as a result of the use of Paxil can include: "congenital heart defects", "patent ductus arteriosus", "coarctation of the aorta", persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn ("PPHN"), "omphalocele" (an abdominal birth defect), "craniosynostosis" (cranial skull defect), "clubbed foot", anencephely (brain defects), "neural tube defects" ("Spina Bifida"), "cleft lip" and "cleft palate" and the list goes on.
By holding the large pharmaceutical companies responsible now for your baby’s ASD/VSD birth defect will help you with the expense of medical bills in the future. Talk to An Attorney about Your Child’s ASD/VSD
[Posted on Jan 19]
Learning that your child has an atrial septal defect or ventral septal defect (ASD/VSD) can be a challenging moment for any family, and although these congenital heart defects are some of the most common, there is no doubt that tremendous emotional and even perhaps financial pain may be experienced. However, for some families, a prescription drug may ultimately be to blame for the suffering caused, and if this is the case, legal action should be sought.
The prescription drug Paxil, also known as Paroxetine has been recognized as increasing the risk for congenital heart defects if taken during the first trimester of pregnancy, and although the knowledge regarding the potential dangers of taking Paxil during pregnancy are now well understood, this knowledge hadn’t been disseminated effectively following the release of Paxil in the early 1990s; since this is the case, it’s likely that a sizeable number of women took Paxil during pregnancy and are now raising children with defects such as ASD/VSD. Undoubtedly, if it can be proven that these defects were caused by Paxil and the negligence of Paxil’s maker, then appropriate compensation needs to be paid to those families who have suffered as a result of Paxil; however, gaining appropriate compensation is not easy, and as such, suffering families will need to rely on a good Paxil attorney if any hope for justice is to exist.
Was your child born with ASD/VSD which may have been caused by the prescription drug Paxil? If so, then now is the time to take action by contacting an attorney with prescription drug lawsuit experience. After talking to an attorney, it can be decided whether or not seeking legal action really is the correct thing to do, and if it does appear that solid grounds for litigation exist, then you and your attorney will be able to move forward with legal action against the maker of Paxil so that your family can gain a chance at both compensation and justice for your child’s defect and all of the suffering which has been the result of the defect.
