Neural tube defects are birth defects involving the brain and spinal cord. There are two common neural tube defects: spina bifida and anencephaly. With spina bifida, the spinal column of the fetus does not close completely during the first month of pregnancy. Usually this is accompanied with nerve damage causing some paralysis of the legs. With anencephaly, much of the brain does not develop. Unfortunately, fetuses with anencephaly are either stillborn or die shortly after birth.
