Spina Bifida

Spina Bifida Found in Newborns Whose Mothers Took Paxil

According to the American Medical Association about 40,000 women in the United States were taking some type of antidepressant in 2006. One of the antidepressants they took is Paxil or paroxetine. Studies have now discovered that women who took Paxil while pregnant gave birth to children born with congenital heart defects and other birth defects. Heart defects such as Tetralogy of Fallot, Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome and Interrupted Aortic Arch have shown up in newborns whose mothers took Paxil. Other birth defects such as spina bifida have also been found. Spina bifida is a birth defect caused by the incomplete closure of the embryonic neural tube. Some of the vertebrae that lie over the spinal cord are not fully developed and stay open and unfused. The spinal cord can protrude through an opening in the bones if the opening is big enough. Sometimes there is no fluid-filled sac around the spinal cord with spina bifida. The defect consists of four categories:

  • Spina bifida occulta
  • Spina bifida cystica (myelomeningocele)
  • Meningocele
  • Lipomeningocele

Myelomeningocele is the most common form of spina bifida. While the defect can be closed after the baby is born, there is no guarantee that normal function will be restored for the baby's spinal cord. Currently, there is no cure for nerve damage caused by spina bifida.

If your child was born with spina bifida and you took Paxil during pregnancy, you might want to contact an experienced Paxil attorney. There could be many medical hardships facing you and your child in the future and the guilty party should have to pay for it. The manufacturers of Paxil were aware of birth defects resulting from their drug as early as 1998 and did not turn this information over to the Food and Drug Administration. With the help of a good attorney, you can take on Paxil's manufacturers and get the compensation you will need for the emotional and physical stress you and your child will have to endure. Spina bifida is not the only defect found in newborns after their mothers took Paxil. Heart defects like Transposition of the Great Arteries, Coarctation of the Aorta and Pulmonary Stenosis have also been found and can cause just as much financial and emotional adversity.

If your child was born with spina bifida or any other kind of birth defect after the mother took Paxil while pregnant, contact the offices of Chandler, Mathis & Zivley, PC today. Spina Bifida Is A Neural Tube Defect That Has Been Linked To Paxil Use In Pregnant Women

[Posted on Jan 16]

At this point, countless studies have been done on Paxil to determine what potentially severe side effects of the drug  are possible beyond those that were originally communicated to doctors and patients. After years of research following the release of the drug in 1992, it’s been confirmed that there's a particularly high risk of Paxil birth defects when taken by women who are pregnant. Thousands of women who took Paxil during their pregnancy gave birth to a child suffering from serious medical conditions, including neural tube defects like spina bifida. These women are now able to connect the health problems facing their newborn with a specific behavior but they have a lot of questions about why the makers of Paxil, GlaxoSmithKline, failed to warn against that behavior.

These victims believe that GlaxoSmithKline bears some responsibility the ongoing struggles they’re facing. Families that have a child born with spina bifida incur unexpected medical costs as a result of the care needed to treat the condition. These financial issues combined with the stress they’re dealing with over the long term health of their child make them wish they’d never taken Paxil. An option many of these victims have explored is a Paxil lawsuit against GlaxoSmithKline.

Recent examples of Paxil lawsuits have proven that victims can win a court battle against the pharmaceutical company. They’re being awarded financial compensation that they’re able to apply to their medical bills. Not only does this alleviate the burden presented by those bills but it ensures they’re able to focus on getting their child healthy with the best treatment. If you have a child that was born with spina bifida or any other Paxil birth defects, you may be entitled to similar compensation should you decide to file a prescription drug lawsuit.

You can determine if a Paxil lawsuit is appropriate for your family by consulting with an attorney that is experienced in this kind of litigation, ideally with cases related to this drug. The Law Offices of Chandler, Mathis, & Zivley, PC, offer a free legal consultation to former Paxil patients. The firm has been consistently successful in pharmaceutical lawsuits against companies like GlaxoSmithKline. Their experience will be used to assess the strength of your case and advise you of what options you should consider. If you decide to move forward with a Paxil lawsuit, you’ll have an attorney already prepared to go to work building your case.
